If your vinyl record is skipping, it’s usually easy to sort out. Here are some common reasons for skipping and simple ways to fix them.
- Dirty record
Dust, dirt, or oils from your hands can get into the record's grooves and cause skipping. You can clean records with distilled water, a cleaning solution, and an anti-static brush.
- Unlevelled turntable
If your turntable is on an uneven, wobbly, or shaky surface, it may cause the record to skip. A spirit level can help you check that both the turntable and the surface underneath are nice and level. Be sure to place your turntable on a sturdy, stable surface to reduce vibrations and keep your records playing smoothly.
- Dirty or worn stylus
The stylus, or needle, that touches the record can become worn or dirty over time. This can make it harder for the needle to glide smoothly through the grooves. You should regularly inspect and clean the stylus.
- Improperly Adjusted Tonearm Weight
If the tonearm weight isn’t set correctly, the stylus may skip across the record. You can adjust the counterweight on the tonearm to gently increase the pressure or weight on stylus, if your turntable has this feature
- Damaged record
If the record consistently skips in the same spot, there could be a defect in that area, such as warping, damaged grooves, or scratching
